Growing Millinocket's Economy - (207) 723-7000 The Town of Millinocket is geographically positioned to service the greater Katahdin Region and points beyond. Currently, many businesses serve local customers and satellite communities in the Katahdin Region from their Millinocket location. Other businesses focus on clientele who are located across the State of Maine, New England, the United States, the Canadian Maritimes or the world. All this can be done while living in the majestic four season outdoor setting that is the Katahdin Region.
Millinocket, "The Magic City", has a long tradition of producing quality products and services that have become highly sought after in the marketplace. One example is the local paper company and its workers who for over 100 years have shipped its product across the country and around the world. Modernization of the paper mill, and resulting shift in employment, has created new opportunity for former paper company employees. The magic is back in "The Magic City" with the successful startups of, a wood cabinet manufacturer, a mail order specialty products retailer, wreath making factory, and an engineering firm, among others.
The natural resources of the Katahdin Region have produced many varied manufacturing opportunities over the years. Recently a shift towards expanding the recreational use of the regions natural resources has taken place. This has resulted in increased opportunities in the Katahdin Region for outdoor recreational businesses. The positive impact of tourists who come to the area year round is felt by many service businesses in Millinocket. The recent LURC approval, of a major resort development just outside of Millinocket, should continue to create economic opportunities in the Town of Millinocket.
The 2000 Census put the population of Millinocket at 5200 individuals, living in approximately 2300 households. Millinocket currently has 25% of its population between the ages of 25 and 44. This equates to a workforce of 1300 individuals between age 25 and 44. In the Katahdin Region, the number of available workers in this age group is even higher, making Millinocket a great place to start or expand your business.
